Africa-Press – Liberia. In just 100 years, the African penguin population has plummeted from over 1.5 million to fewer than 10,000 pairs today.
One of the main contributors to its decline is the food source due to overfishing, says Shanet Rutgers, Head of Penguins at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
While organisations continue to do incredible work to safeguard these animals, the African penguin still needs great public support.
“It’s the only penguin species that you’ll find on the southern coastline, and within the next 10 to 15 years, there won’t be any around. This species is so critical, and it’s got a very big impact on education as well as the tourism industry,” she says.
If you find yourself in the Cape Town area on Saturday 11 October, the Two Oceans Aquarium – in partnership with Guardians of the Deep and SANCCOB – are hosting a Waddle for the African Penguin.
The 4km waddle starts at Long Beach in Simon’s Town at 8:30am and ends at Seaforth Beach near the Boulders Penguin Colony in Simon’s Town.
Come dressed in your best penguin colours and comfortable walking shoes.
