Africa-Press – Liberia. The initiative, led by a locally formed reconstruction committee, comes in the wake of growing frustration over the government’s continued neglect of the C.H. Rennie Hospital in Kakata.

In a powerful demonstration of community resilience and unity, citizens and leaders of Margibi County have officially broken ground for the reconstruction of the Dolo Town Comprehensive Hospital. The facility, which served as the primary public healthcare center for Lower Margibi, was destroyed by fire on February 22, 2025.

The initiative, led by a locally formed reconstruction committee, comes in the wake of growing frustration over the government’s continued neglect of the C.H. Rennie Hospital in Kakata, which also suffered extensive fire damage over four years ago and remains unconstructed. Citizens say the government’s prolonged inaction left them with no choice but to take matters into their own hands.

The groundbreaking ceremony held Saturday was attended by several prominent county figures, including Senator Nathaniel F. McGill and Representative Ivar K. Jones of District #2. In a passionate address, Sen. McGill called for unity among residents and leaders and pledged what he described as “100% support to the project till completion.” Through his office’s lobbying efforts, the committee successfully raised over US$40,000 and secured the donation of 10,000 cement blocks to jumpstart the construction.

Rep. Ivar Jones commended the initiative and pledged 200 bags of cement to bolster the reconstruction effort. He expressed gratitude to the citizens and committee members for their commitment, assuring the community of his continued support.

Chairman of the reconstruction committee, Mr. Sylvester Sandi Carter, lauded the dedication of his team and the community’s collective effort. “The members of this committee are true patriots to Margibi,” he declared. “This is what people-driven development looks like.”

Construction work has already commenced, with Inter-Tropic Construction Company mobilized on-site. Their presence has reignited hope among residents who had feared losing access to essential healthcare services for the foreseeable future.

As the project moves forward, community leaders are calling on all citizens, Margibians at home and abroad, and partners to contribute in any way they can to ensure the successful rebuilding of the only major health facility in the area.
