Africa-Press – Madagascar. Senegal’s national rugby sevens team will face Ghana’s, Sunday, at 1:30 p.m., in a match counting for the quarter-finals of the Africa Men’s Seven tournament which takes place in the island Maurice (June 24-25), learned the APS from the secretary of the Senegalese Rugby Federation (FSR), Oumar Diagne.
The competition will also serve as prequalification for the next Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Senegal is playing in Group C, along with Cameroon, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire. The Lions finished top of their group with three wins in as many games.
Eight other countries participated in the tournament. These are Ghana, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria, housed in pool A, while Mauritius, Botswana, Lesotho and Algeria form pool B.
After the group matches, Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Mauritius, Ghana, Lesotho, Nigeria, Senegal and DR Congo secured their ticket to the quarter-finals.
Algeria and Egypt will face each other, Mauritius having to challenge Côte d’Ivoire, while Nigeria will challenge Botswana. Burundi will play DR Congo, Cameroon Lesotho.
Senegal, in case of qualification for the semi-finals, will meet the winner of the match to oppose Algeria to Egypt.
The teams that finish in the first three places will qualify for the second round of the tournament scheduled for September 16-17 in Zimbabwe.
They will join Burkina Faso, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Uganda, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
These different teams will play the second and final phase of the qualifications, at the end of which the three teams in the final classification will validate their ticket for the final phase of the “Paris 2024” Olympic Games.
