Africa-PressMalawi. Malawi National Football Team Coach Meck Mwase is waiting for the results of Covid test to be cleared to join the squad in readiness for the Cosafa Cup. Mwase and his assistant Lovemore Fazili missed the senior side’s friendly against Tanzania after they tested positive for coronavirus.

Flames regrouped Monday with players and officials subjected to Covid test in line with guidelines that were put in place facilitating football return amidst the pandemic.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Media and Competitions Director Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed the coach had undergone another test before joining the squad.

“We are expected to get the results early Wednesday. Even the players have been tested. The initial testing happened when the players were at home. Another test is due today [Monday],” he said.

Zakazaka also confirmed that Mwase’s assistant Lovemore Fazili had been cleared to join the squad. Mwase named five foreign country-based players and 34 Malawi-based players ahead of the regional showpiece slated for July 6 to18 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

There are 10 new players including Tigers goalkeeper Christopher Mikuwa, Nyasa Big Bullets goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba, Pilirani Thulu of Red Lions, Karonga United duo of Anthony Mfune and Thoko Harrison.

Chikondi Kamanga of Silver Strikers, Civil Service United striker Lanken Mwale, Blue Eagles striker Gaddie Chirwa, Blessings Mpokera and Misheck Selemani (both Bullets) have also been included in the squad. Seasoned strikers Zicco Mkanda of Bullets and Civil Service United’s Muhamad Sulumba have been recalled.
