Africa-Press – Malawi. Senior Chief Kuntaja has touted early childhood development (ECD) centres as key to community development efforts. He said this when New Apostolic Church Relief Organisation donated an early childhood development centre to community members at Kazigande in Lunzu, Blantyre.

It is hoped that the centre will help children develop their full cognitive, emotional, social and physical potential. “We have been looking forward to having facilities like these for a long time because they unearth children’s talent,” he said.

District Apostle helper Arnold Mhango, who was the guest of honour, said children that were exposed to ECD stood a better chance of excelling in society.

“Investing in early childhood development does increase the capacity of the young to better learn and respond to educational challenges in primary school and later in their lives,” he said.

Blantyre District Social Welfare Officer Stephano Joseph described the centre as a timely gift. “There is a difference between a child who attends ECD and one who doesn’t. It is important for parents to know that every child has the right to an education.

We can only accomplish Malawi 2063 vision goals if children get this education and it all starts from ECDs,” he said The centre is in full operation with more than 130 children attending classes. The total construction cost sits at K82.36 million, including the drilling of a borehole, and was funded by NAK-Karitativ of Germany.
