Africa-Press – Malawi. Babylon is falling down. Corruption has captured all sectors of government. Cost of living is rising everyday. Most leaders and government officials are corrupt. The centre can’t hold Tonse government any more.
It is said that the fish starts rotting from its head. President Chakwera has proved to be a liar and a hypocrite. He lied that he would resign if he failed to deliver his promises within two years.
Chakwera fooled Malawians that he would crack nepotism, tribalism and regionalism but he was the first person to appoint his daughter, son-in- law, church members and acquaintances to public positions not even based on merit.
Chakwera also lied that he would crack down corruption and now there is evidence that he signed a contract to the corruption suspect, Sattar. Even Saulos Chilima his vice, insinuated that President Chakwera should not hide behind presidential immunity.
President Chakwera is on record telling Malawians that no cabinet minister is implicated in the Sattar saga. However, social media is awash with documents implicating minister Eisenhower Mkaka of benefiting a Mercedes Benz from bribe proceeds. Can Mkaka come in the open to clear the mist?
Vice president Saulos Chilima is slowly losing public trust. He is implicated in the Sattar corruption scandal if the report from National Crime Agency (NCA) UK and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Malawi is to go by. To show the seriousness of the allegations, President Chakwera stopped delegating him. Vice President is nepotistic too as his mother-in-law is in Zambia for diplomatic mission.
We now hear three judges, the final arbitrators of justice, are named in suspected corruption scandal. Kudos to Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda who recently admitted the existence of corruption in the Judiciary. Acknowledging the problem is the first step to resolving it.
With corruption registered in the Judiciary, have you wondered why 2019 presidential elections were nullified even though the court found no evidence of rigging? Even though Dr. Saulos Chilima, the main contestant, admitted that the use of tippex did not affect his own votes?
Are you perplexed that the court is shielding corruption suspects by granting stay orders restraining ACB from investigating and arresting corruption suspects including former Lands Minister Kezzie Msukwa? Are you flabbergasted that the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Steven Kayuni, refused to grant consent to prosecute Ashok and Sattar?
Are you surprised that Mr. Henry Kachaje is still the Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi Regulatory Authority (MERA) who was implicated by the office of Ombudsman whose report was blocked by the court? it is said that darkness takes centre stage when light loses its brightness.
According to Malawi news tabloid, six Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officials, 13 Malawi Police Service (MPS) officials, two Financial Intelligence Authority officials and one ACB official also benefitted from Sattar dealings. With this well coordinated network, are we bamboozled that corruption cases take ages to be investigated and concluded? Are you mesmerised that the police has failed to give us their findings on the brutal murder of ACB officer, Mr. Issa Njauju for over six years now?
We also hear that ten journalists and three vocal civil society organisations leaders have partaken in the Sattar saga. Have you wondered why the vocal Gift Trapence has become silent over corruption all of a sudden? Let me them speak out and condemn corruption now if they are not involved?
As an addendum to the devil’s list of corruption, three principal secretaries, two officials from Reserve Bank of Malawi and two chiefs of staff are also enjoying the glory of Sattar’s diabolical machinations. Is Malawi a cursed nation?
In government, once you are implicated in serious crime scandals like these, you are supposed to step aside to pave way for thorough and independent investigations.
Unfortunately, these corruption suspects are interfering with the course of justice. Using their positions, they are trying all their effort to seal any traces of wrong doings.
We therefore implore the responsible authorities to suspend all corruption suspects forthwith to pave way for thorough investigations. Otherwise the Tonse Alliance government will continue to crumble at a supersonic speed.
