Africa-Press – Malawi. The 2022 TNM Super League season grossed K587 million in gate revenue, Times Sport has learnt. Super League of Malawi (Sulom) released the amount yesterday two weeks after the end of the 2022 TNM Super League season.
The figure is slightly above the K500 million which was realised in gate revenue in 2019. The sum is a big improvement when compared to K78.5 million gate revenue, collected during the 2020/21 season, which was affected by Covid-19 pandemic.
Sulom Treasurer Malinda Chinyama said although there is an improvement, the league has potential to generate more revenue. “Honestly, the figure is not a true reflection of what the league can generate the entire season. There is a lot of work we need to do. If teams are able to market their matches, we can generate more resources,” Chinyama said.
Out of K587 million, all the 16 Super League teams shared K226 million. As usual, crowd pullers Nyasa Big Bullets are the top earners having pocketed K60.5 million.
This means Bullets pocketed K100 million from the league having received K40 million in prize money. Bullets Chief Administration Officer Albert Chigoga attributed the increased gate to good marketing strategy and the team’s performance. “There has been improvement from previous season.
Even our revenue in the league alone is very impressive. Bullets have been promoting their home games effectively and its performance created massive attraction in the season,” Chigoga said.
The first round of the TNM Super League grossed K308 million which means K479 million was realised in the second round. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are the second top earners having pocketed K36.8 million whereas Silver Strikers are third with K20.6 million.
Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar were the fourth highest earners having pocketed K13 million. The team’s general secretary Mavuto Mgode said there is room for improvement next season.
“The performance of the team helped us a lot generate more resources. We lost a lot of revenues by playing away from Dedza. We will do better next season,” Mgode said.
Blue Eagles pocketed K12 million followed by Kamuzu Barracks and Civil Service United on K10 million and K9 million respectively. Karonga United and relegated Rumphi United also generated encouraging resources during the 2022 season having received K8.3million and K7.8million respectively.
Mafco pocketed K7.6 million just like TN Stars. Mighty Tigers got K7.2 million whereas Moyale Barracks were the lowest earners having pocketed K4.4 million the entire season.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Sulom pocketed K45 million each. Ground owners pocketed K107.6 million the entire season. During the 2020/21 season, Super League clubs shared K30 million.
