BBC panel discussion rates Chakwera’s Tonse lowly on rule of law respect

Africa-Press – Malawi. Panelists in the British Corporation Broadcasting (BBC) facilitated discussion On Tuesday, November 8, 2022 in the capital Lilongwe rated President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance Administration lowly on respect for the rule of law.

This against Chakwera’s noisy on his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) H5 that includes rule of law. During the BBC panel discussion, Rights campaigner and lawyer Chikondi Chijozi gave Tonse a rating of three out of 10 on respect for the rule.

Chijozi apart from highlighting the continued arrests of activists organising demonstrations, she cited the recent case in which government failed to comply with a determination of the Ombudsman on National Oil Company of Malawi as another case of disrespect for the rule of law.

Charles Kajoloweka, another activist, said while there are some positives the serious dent to the current administration is a crackdown on activists and “arrests made against people exercising their freedom of expression”.

Maria Mainja another panelist representing opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said it is unfortunate for Chakwera’s Tonse Administration to launch a crackdown on activists organising demonstrations when the regime itself is a beneficiary of demonstrations.

Taking his turn, government spokesperson Gospel Kazako says the current administration is committed to respecting the rule of law arguing that the leadership is enforcing existing laws and that there is nothing strange about it .

On fuel scarcity Kazako said this is not the first time the country is facing fuel challenges. He also said it is wrong to blame the current administration as if this is their own making adding that the situation has been made worse due to global issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war. The panel discussion is part of BBC World Questions Program recording.
