Africa-Press – Malawi. Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have identified Bangwe Super Queens for possible acquisition or partnership in their quest to return to continental competitions.
Initially, four teams including DD Sunshine, Evirom and Ntopwa had expressed interest to partner Wanderers by becoming the team’s women’s side. This follows Wanderers’ desire to return to Caf competitions and one of the requirements is for participating teams to establish a women’s team.
Wanderers Company Secretary Chancy Gondwe said they had opted for Bangwe Super Queens because they share a common background. “For a start, partnering DD Sunshine was impractical as they are based in Lilongwe. We also analysed the other teams including Evirom and Ntopwa but we feel we have something in common with Bangwe Super Queens.
“There is a saying that Wanderers is from Bangwe township so we had to settle for Super Queens,” he said. Gondwe said the process is underway and stakeholders, including Wanderers supporters, will be notified in due course.
“Once we are through with the process, we will make an official public announcement but it is our wish to return to Caf competitions to play against the best,” he said.
Super Queens coach and owner Thom Kazembe said he would be delighted to partner Wanderers. “Discussions started long ago but they stalled. I hope the process will be finalised soon,” he said.
National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Suzgo Ngwira encouraged Wanderers to establish a women’s outfit. “They have taken the right way by opting to buy or partner Bangwe Super Queens. They will help transform the side, thereby developing women’s football,” she said.
Last year Wanderers’ rivals Nyasa Big Bullets bought Blantyre Zero to complete Caf requirements. Wanderers last participated in Caf Champions League in February 2018 where they bowed out to AS Vita of DR Congo 6-1 on aggregate
