Africa-Press – Malawi. The Ministry of Education has expelled 30 students from secondary schools across Malawi on disciplinary grounds. This is after education divisions submitted names of students earmarked for expulsion from school and the ministry has granted them the go ahead.
According to a letter which Alexis Bwanthi has signed on behalf of Secretary for Education Chikondano Mussa, some students have been expelled over teasing and bullying, stealing books from the library and beer drinking.
“You will recall that your divisions submitted reports on students disciplinary cases in which recommendations for expulsion from school was made. Ministerial approval has been granted to have the students expelled,” the letter reads.
Among the students, three have been expelled from Mzimba Secondary School, one each from Yamba Community Day Secondary School and Madisi Secondary School, with five each being expelled from Ntchisi Secondary School and Salima Secondary School.
In addition, two students have been expelled from M’mbomba Secondary School, two others from Chayamba Secondary School while 11 students have been shown the exit door at Thyolo Secondary School.
Meanwhile, Civil Society Education Coalition Executive Director Benedicto Kondowe has lauded education officials for taking the measure. He said discipline is key to success in academic institutions.
“We are just hoping that the ministry gave the students a chance to be heard,” he said.
