The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has released final figures for voters for the September 16 elections.
In a statement released on Friday, Mec says it registered 7,203,490 voters for the 2025 elections.
This represents 65.7 percent of the total number of eligible voters as projected by the National Statistical Office which pegged it at 10,957,490.
According to Mec, female voters make up the majority with over four million women registered — accounting for 57.1 percent of the total — while male registrants stand at just over three million, representing 42.9 percent.
The registration exercise, which began in November 2024, was a three-phase process across Malawi, followed by a supplementary registration, verification exercise, and a data cleaning process to ensure accuracy and integrity of the final register.
SIGNED THE STATEMENT— Mpesi“For the 2025 General Election, the Malawi Electoral Commission has constructed new voters’ register. This was necessitated by changes that were made to the electoral map,” reads the statement, signed by Mec’s chief elections officer, Andrew Mpesi.
Mec says the changes had resulted from the redemarcation of constituency and ward boundaries and resulting increased numbers of wards and constituencies.
The statement further says that the number of registered voters will directly influence the distribution of polling stations across the country.
“Based on these figures, the Commission will use the same to determine the number of polling stations where polling will be done and these will be published in the gazette and newspapers at an appropriate time,” Mec says.
The elections management body says currently, it is in the process of disaggregating the voter registration figures using other demographics.
Malawi will go to the polls on September16, 2025, to elect president, members of Parliament, and local government councillors.
This will be the first election conducted under the newly adjusted electoral boundaries, which increased the number of constituencies from 193 to 229 and wards from 462 to 509.
Mec will launch the official campaign period on July 14.
So far, 17 presidential candidates have collected nomination forms from Mec.
