Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Men’s Under-20 National Football Team’s quest to end the 17-year African Union Sports Council (Ausc) title drought ended in frustration as they settled for a silver medal at the end of the development competition at the University of Namibia in Windhoek.

The junior Flames had given the nation hope and promise but ended up dancing to Amapiano tunes, going down to South Africa’s Amajita 3-0 Sunday.

SCORING FREELY—MhangoHowever, promising attacker Mwisho Mhango gave the nation solace after he banged two awards, winning the player of the tournament and top goal scorer accolades, having scored five goals in as many matches.

South Africa’s Emile Witbooi carried his team to victory after providing assists for all three goals.

He engineered South Africa into the lead after his freekick was met by Khayalethu Mzimela for the opener in the first five minutes.

Witbooi’s heroics tore Malawi’s defence to allow Simphiwe Mlondo to score Amajita’s second goal.

He then engineered Omphemetse Sekgoto’s goal to seal the win.

The junior Flames endured a bad ending after Kondwani Tebulo received a red card whereas Mhango had a late penalty saved.

Junior Flames coach Milias Pofera Jegwe hailed his boys for the effort despite the loss.

“I must congratulate my boys for whatever they achieved. We came this far against all odds because of their determination. I also congratulate South Africa for the win,” Pofera said.
