Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has urged political parties participating in the upcoming general elections to refrain from physical confrontation and verbal insults during the campaign period.

Instead, Chakwera has challenged all candidates and their representatives to engage the electorate by sharing their plans on how they intend to address the daily challenges faced by Malawians.

Chakwera, who is the candidate for governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP), made the remarks yesterday at Nankumba Trading Centre in Mangochi following a visit to Senior Chief Nankumba at his official residence.

“I know this is a campaign period and there will be many rallies taking place. Let us all avoid insulting or assaulting one another while seeking votes. We are one country and one people, and the least we can do is let this election divide us,” he said.

Chakwera further encouraged locals to exercise their right to vote for leaders who have demonstrated the ability to sustain the country’s economic growth.

“Personally, I believe my administration has established a solid foundation that will help the country develop to the point where it can address the challenges faced by Malawians.

“I am asking you to vote for me on September 16 so I can continue implementing policies that will benefit future generations,” he said.

Chakwera added that, if re-elected, his government will prioritise food security, ensuring that every household is capable of producing enough food to sustain themselves.

He also mentioned plans to rehabilitate roads in key areas to improve the transportation of farm produce to markets.

In his remarks, aspiring Member of Parliament for Mangochi West, Hophmally Makande, appealed to Chakwera to support the people in his constituency by providing irrigation farming equipment, enabling them to plant crops outside the rainy season.

Makande added that the people in Traditional Authority Nankumba are struggling to produce sufficient food due to erratic rainfall, which he believes can be mitigated by making use of the dambo land available in the area.

He also called for support for the health sector, saying the entire Mangochi West lacks maternity facilities, forcing expectant mothers to travel long distances to give birth.
