Africa-Press – Malawi. Lilongwe City Centre’s newly elected MP, Gift “The Landlord” Nankhuni, shook Parliament on Tuesday with a bold message to President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration: Respect, protect, and continue the development projects started by former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
Delivering his response to the State of the Nation Address, Nankhuni did not mince his words. He declared that no political transition should erase the good done by a previous leader, insisting that Chakwera’s legacy stands tall and undeniable.
“You cannot take away the good things Chakwera did,” he charged. “Look at education, CDF, the quality of roads, the infrastructure standards. These things speak for themselves. We must statutorise them — protect them in law.”
Then came the punchline:
At 50 years old, the Landlord said he has never seen the scale of development Malawi witnessed in recent years.
“The roads from City Centre to Mzuzu? Massive. The width? Unprecedented. These are standards we must continue, not abandon,” he said, drawing murmurs across the chamber.
But Nankhuni didn’t stop there. He turned his fire toward big companies operating in Lilongwe, calling them out for reaping billions while giving back crumbs.
He singled out the Lilongwe Water Board (LWB), accusing it of benefiting from Kauma’s sewage systems while Kauma residents endure pollution and suffering.
“I will be visiting these companies,” he warned. “They must build schools. They must build hospitals. They must pay school fees. That is my promise to the people of Lilongwe City Centre.”
On LWB, he was even sharper:
“All the waste from Lilongwe is dumped in Kauma. People are suffering. What are you doing about it? Build a hospital there — it’s your responsibility.”
Amid the fiery critique, Nankhuni paused to acknowledge former MP Alfred Jiya, commending him for maintaining the constituency to the standard it is today.
His message to Parliament was unmistakable: Development must rise above politics — and companies must start giving back.
The Landlord has spoken.
