Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawians seeking passports, permits and other immigration services are expected to benefit from faster, safer and more reliable digital systems, as the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has launched a two-week ICT Capacity Development Training aimed at strengthening frontline service delivery across the country.
The training was officially opened on Monday 24 November 2025 by the Department’s Director General, Counsel Dennis Chipao, at the National College of Information Technology (NACIT).
The programme is being funded by the World Bank under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP), with technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Chipao commended the World Bank for its continued financial support and applauded IOM for its technical partnership, noting that such collaboration is critical in modernising Malawi’s migration systems.
He also thanked NACIT for hosting the training and ensuring that immigration ICT officers receive high-quality, relevant digital skills.
He urged participants to approach the training with commitment, saying, “ICT is the backbone of modern border security and a critical enabler of efficient service delivery.
What you learn here will directly improve how we serve Malawians and safeguard our nation, so I encourage you to give it your full dedication.”
IOM Chief of Mission to Malawi, Her Excellency Nomagugu Ncube, echoed the Director General’s remarks and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the Department.
She praised the strong cooperation among World Bank, DoICS, the Ministry of Transport, PIU and other partners in driving migration sector reforms.
NACIT Principal Alice Kanjadza underscored her institution’s role in fostering practical, comprehensive ICT education, saying digital transformation is now indispensable for government institutions seeking to enhance efficiency and strengthen national security.
The training will equip ICT officers with specialised skills in Microsoft SQL Server Administration, Windows Server Administration, Networking and Cybersecurity, improvements expected to boost technical capacity, strengthen system reliability and reinforce Malawi’s border management architecture for the benefit of the public.
