Africa-Press – Malawi. Beyond the excitement of the Three Nations Women Football Tournament, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc and the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, took their mission of impact off the pitch by donating assorted food items to Mai Mbambande Shelter Home for the Elderly in Lilongwe.
The donation included bags of maize, rice, beans, sugar, and cooking oil, essential resources identified to meet the daily nutritional needs of the elderly residents.
NBM plc, the official sponsors of the Scorchers and the three Nations Tournament which took place in Lilongwe, emphasized that the gesture forms part of its commitment to community upliftment and supporting vulnerable groups across the country.
Speaking during the handover, South End Service Centre Manager, Nguwachi Selemani, said the partnership with the Scorchers is about touching lives beyond football.
“As a Bank, our partnership with the Scorchers goes beyond football. It is about impact, community, and ensuring progress reaches every Malawian, especially the most vulnerable,” she said.
Selemani added that the initiative offers comfort and dignity to the elderly, reminding them that they are valued and not forgotten.
She also commended the shelter’s founder, Deborah Mbale, who established the home in 2020 at just 25 years old, describing her as a shining example of youth leadership and compassion.
“The Scorchers represent strength and unity, and their presence here shows that women can inspire change both on and off the pitch,” she added.
The Scorchers were represented by artist Jetu, whose song ‘Ona Pangolin’ is the theme for NBM plc’s Women’s Championship, symbolizing empowerment and resilience.
Receiving the donation, Mbale expressed gratitude to both NBM plc and the Scorchers, noting that the support would significantly improve the welfare of the elderly.
“These food items will go a long way in supporting the elderly under our care. We also call on other well-wishers to offer support,” she said.
Scorchers Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, also applauded the initiative, highlighting the power of collaboration in uplifting communities.
