Funding seen as game-changer for Beach Soccer-Haiya

Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya says consistent investment in beach soccer is critical to improving performance and ensuring long-term success for the national team.

Haiya was speaking after FAM handed over K83 million to the Beach Soccer Association of Malawi as sponsorship for the recently concluded national league held across several districts.

He said Malawi’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and 2024 has already shown the team’s potential, stressing that sustained funding would help turn isolated achievements into consistent results.

Haiya noted that the national league has expanded the talent pool by attracting young and grassroots players, allowing coaches to scout, assess and develop players beyond the previously limited group.

He added that the competition has kept players active even when the national team has not been in camp, helping maintain fitness levels and continuity in player development.

Haiya also revealed that plans to establish a beach soccer facility within the city are at implementation stage, with a desert pitch or stadium expected to be presented by March 2026.

Beach Soccer Association chairperson Force Ngwira said the release of prize money to teams from five centres and ongoing league activities have laid a strong foundation for a competitive national team once preparations resume.
