Africa-Press – Malawi. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says a strong and well-coordinated Parliament can help Malawi in safeguarding public funds as Malawi faces debt challenges and growing demand for public resources.

UNDP Governance Portfolio Manager Nanise Saune-Qaloewai said this during an induction workshop for parliamentary oversight committees on Monday.

The committees are the Budget and Finance Committee, the Public Accounts Committee, and the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Corporations and State Enterprises.

Saune-Qaloewai said the country’s Parliament was operating in an environment of increasing fiscal pressure, which needed parliamentary committees to play a central role in ensuring accountability across the budget cycle.

“Malawi faces significant public debt challenges, limited fiscal space and growing demand on public resources. In such a context, strong and well-coordinated parliamentary oversight is not optional; it is essential. It safeguards public funds, promotes fiscal discipline and strengthens public trust in institutions,” she said.

Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman said there was a need for Parliament to be financially independent from the Executive.

He said this would help it effectively carry out its oversight role.

“Once we, as Parliament, have full financial independence, it means that we will be able to conduct our work freely,” Suleman said.

The workshop runs for two days and is expected to wind up today.
