Africa-Press – Malawi. The 2021 Malawi Gender Barometer has revealed that 1.6 percent of the estimated 18 million people in Malawi have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus. The Malawi Gender Barometer has since called for Malawians to avoid spreading misinformation on Covid vaccines.

Speaking during the launch of the report on Wednesday, Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Minister Patricia Kaliati said the report reveals that most women have not been vaccinated against coronavirus, which exposes them to infection.

Kaliati attributed the low percentage to misinformation and higher illiteracy levels. “Through gender and social welfare officers in all the districts, my ministry will embark on a campaign to sensitise community members to the importance of getting vaccinated,” she said.

Southern African Development Community Protocol Gender Chairperson Emma Kaliya said the launch of the barometer was aimed at helping stakeholders reflect on the situation and stimulate the adoption of concrete actions to ensure that the choices of women in the country were safeguarded.

“The barometer we have launched is a strategic tool for building on gains made from the past years,” Kaliya said.

United Nations Women Representative Ondina Barca Vieira called on the government and civil society organisations in Malawi to promote gender equality. The report comes as cases of coronavirus have declined in the country.
