Africa-Press – Malawi. Swimming genius Tasunje Mkavea showcased his growing potential after he dominated the National Schools Swimming Championship, winning 15 gold medals and breaking six national St Andrew’s International High School in Blantyre last weekend.

The youngster also set 15 personal records across 15 events during the two-day championship which drew 343 swimmers. Mkamvea was not contented with his exploits.

“I feel good to win so many gold medals and break a number of records. However, I still feel there is a sense for improvement because without that, there is no driving force. People should expect more from me as I will go for every single record that I swim for,” the year-nine student at St Andrew’s International High School said after defending the 13 gold medals last year Mkamvea defended individual gold medals in 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m breast-stroke, 100m freestyle, 100 breast-stroke, 200m and 100m individual medley, 200m medley relay and 200m freestyle relay.

The youngster won gold in 800m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Malawi Aquatic Union President Monica Chang’anamuno hailed the swimmers for turning up in large numbers and improved performance.

“The championship has been a great success as it has witnessed many personal best times and national records,” the Minister of Mining said.

Malawi National Council of Sports [MNCS] Board Member Gladson Kuyeri noted positive strides that have been made in the country. “The level of competition during the championship has been encouraging. The young swimmers have given us hope that the future of Malawi aquatics is bright,” Kuyeri, who was accompanied by the council’s chief executive officer Henry Kamata, said.
