Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Chief of Staff, Major General George Jaffu, has asked 731 troops who are set to be deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a peace-keeping mission to be disciplined when executing their duties.
“Maintain high standards of integrity set by Malawian soldiers assigned for United Nations duties in the past,” he told the troops at Chikala Hills in Machinga District Thursday.
United States (US) Ambassador to Malawi David Young and British High Commissioner to Malawi David Pert attended the closing ceremony of pre-deployment training.
Those trained are from the fourteenth contingent of Malawi Battalion and are set for peace-keeping deployment in January next year. “Malawian soldiers have earned respect across the globe due to their strict adherence to work ethics.
“We appeal that you continue raising the country’s flag. The MDF will not hesitate to discipline undisciplined soldiers,” Jaffu said. Young said the US government is committed to supporting the MDF offer peacekeeping training as one way of restoring order in DRC.
“We salute Malawi peacekeepers for being dedicated and courageous as they seek to address human rights violations in Eastern Congo. I encourage them to serve their country with determination,” Young said. On his part, Pert commended Malawian soldiers for being global partners in the restoration of peace and order in countries where tension abounds.
