Africa-Press – Malawi. African ministers have cited humanitarian emergencies as one of the factors fuelling what they call a “migration crisis in Africa”. Homeland Security Minister Jean Sendeza, who addressed delegates Monday, called for immediate solutions to the problem.
“Unprecedented protracted crises, conflicts and humanitarian emergencies have caused a migration crisis in Africa, which has resulted in the avoidable deaths of migrants before reaching their intended destinations,” she said during the opening of the 21st Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (Midsa) Technical Conference in Lilongwe.
The minister urged member states to reflect on issues fuelling migration and come up with a common regional position. “As we face the continuation of simultaneous, unprecedented and complex emergencies within the region and beyond, member states need to address the root causes actively and promote commonly shared values and interests Sendeza said.
She added that there is a need for regional integration and collaboration to promote regular migration. United States of America Ambassador to Malawi David Young said his government is committed to ensuring the safe and orderly migration in the Southern African Development Community region as well as the world as a whole.
“It’s very important that we respect the humanity and dignity of migrants and refugees. We have to work together to express commitment to the humanity of migrants from all nations,” Young said.
The conference provides the region with an opportunity to reflect on the realities of migration governance and the challenges faced in facilitating safe, orderly and regular migration.
