Africa-Press – Malawi. Airtel Malawi has contributed an additional K10 million towards Malawi National Football Team’s participation at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.

The company emerged the successful bidder of the Presidential Table which allowed its managing director Charles Kamoto to sit next to President Lazarus Chakwera during Kuipatsa Moto Flames Fundraising Dinner held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Vice President Saulos Chilima conducted the auction which raised K21 million. The highlight of the night was Airtel Malawi, who bought the seat at K10 million.

This means the company has pumped K35 million into the Flames fundraising initiative after it also donated K25 million recently. After the event, Kamoto said football was the unifying factor, hence the company’s support towards the team.

“The team needs financial and moral support during this crucial moment. We should not shun the team as it needs more resources,” Kamoto said.

Rafik Gaffer also sat together with Chakwera after he bought the seat at K5 million whereas Jones Chanza bought the seat at K6 million Football Association of Malawi (Fam) targeted to raise K75 million through the fundraising dinner.

However, the association was yet to release the figure on how much was raised through the event. Fam First Vice President Jabba Alide described the event as a success.

“We are very pleased with the fundraising we have done. There are more partners who are still coming in and it is our hope that we will get more support from the corporate world and individuals,” Alide said.

As of last week, the association had raised about K1.1 billion out K1.5 billion which the Flames need to prepare and participate in the next year’s event.

The association had a shortfall of K484 million. Malawi will be making a third appearance at the continental show after 1984 in Ivory Coast and 2010 in Angola. The Flames are in Group B alongside Senegal, Guinea and Zimbabwe.
