Africa-Press – Malawi. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Blantyre Wednesday arrested Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba in connection with the irregular clearance of smuggled wood.

Peter MukhitoDPP secretary general Peter Mukhito confirmed the development, saying the ACB is alleging that Namalomba irregularly cleared products when he was working at the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

“Yes, I have heard about the arrest and, as I am talking, Honourable [Joseph] Mwanamvekha [DPP Southern Region vice president] is on his way to ACB offices [in Blantyre],” he said.

Mukhito described the arrest as “politically motivated”.

“How can someone be arrested now when he worked at MRA many years ago? We will wait to hear more about the issue,” he said.

ACB spokesperson Jacquline Ngongonda was unavailable for a comment on the matter as we went to press.

Namalomba worked as customs and excise official responsible for exports at MRA.

He stopped working there is 2015.
