Africa-Press – Malawi. Former president Peter Mutharika has accused the Tonse Alliance administration of plotting to rig the 2025 general elections. Mutharika made the remarks on Friday during a media briefing which he organised at his house in Mangochi. However, government spokesperson Gospel Kazako said Mutharika should be the last person to make such accusations against the current administration.
Mutharika claimed the administration was planning to rig the elections through registration of minors in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) strongholds. “The MCP government has deliberately withheld National Registration Bureau registration machines to disadvantage other regions where MCP is not popular.
“They want to register a lot of children from the central region so that they can vote for them in 2025. This is a serious form of rigging and we will not allow that,” he said.
Mutharika also faulted the recruitment of the Chief Elections Officer for Malawi Electrical Commission (Mec) Andrew Mpesi, whom he described as an MCP diehard. The DPP has been at issue with Mpesi’s appointment, claiming he has been a cadre of MCP.
In his remarks yesterday, Mutharika said the Tonse Alliance government is planning to rig because it is aware that it can no longer be trusted by Malawians after failing to govern in the last two years.
“This government has no clue on how to solve the problems Malawians are facing,” he said. He further urged the government to solve the energy crisis which he said has greatly affected businesses.
He faulted the government for ending the generator deal with Aggreko without putting in place measures that could provide additional power to the grid. In his reaction, Kazako said the current administration ‘is solving problems which were created by the previous regime’.
“Malawians have suffered for a very long time, including the time he was president. This country has been economically down to extent that the citizens had to lower their standards in order to submit. We still see poverty all over. Various reports have confirmed Malawians have been poor for many years including the years DPP was in government. We hope they are not living in the illusion of the Singapore they promised Malawians,” Kazako said.
He said government is currently laying a solid foundation which will make Malawi great. “As government, we have deliberately created an environment that will expose people who are indulging in corruption, unlike as was the case before.
