Africa-Press – Malawi. Barely three months after quitting active politics and giving up his position as United Democratic Front (UDF) leader, Atupele Muluzi has claimed he is receiving calls from people who want him to make a comeback.
Muluzi had reportedly left politics to become a Pan- African business executive. Now he says anything can happen while insisting that he has not made a decision yet.
“I am aware that there are calls for me to return to active politics since I announced that I stepped back and, by the way, I did not use the word resign in my letter.
“I said I stepped back. It is just three months but there are calls already for me to return but there could a reason why those people want me to return. Maybe not as president of the party but anything can happen because you know politics is service,” Muluzi said.
We sought his comments after receiving a tip that he was on his way to return to active politics and to the party’s top seat. UDF interim president Lilian Patel said she was not aware of Muluzi’s purported return.
“I do not know anything to that effect. Maybe you can ask the Secretary General [Kandi Padambo] or the Publicity Secretary [Yusuf Mwawa],” Patel said.
Padambo also said he was not aware that Muluzi was on his way back to active politics and the helm of the party. Muluzi announced his decision to step back from politics in a post on his Facebook page on May 30.
“Together with global business partners, we intend to immediately lead in kick-starting a mini-industrial and economic revolution for the progress and development of Malawi,” he said.
Patel, who is UDF vice president for the Eastern Region, took over the party’s leadership in acting capacity after Muluzi’s departure. The youthful politician took over the reins of the former governing part from his father, Bakili, who ruled Malawi between 1994 and 2004.
He also contested in the 2019 presidential elections and when the polls were nullified by the High Court sitting as a Constitutional Court, he partnered that time’s president Peter Mutharika as running mate in the fresh poll which they lost. Muluzi also served as minister in various portfolios in the Mutharika and Joyce Banda administrations.
