“Blame yourselves for silly election choices”-Malawi Catholic Monsignor Tamani chides faithfuls

Africa-Press – Malawi. Controversial Blantyre Archdiocese Vicar General for the Catholic Church, Monsignor Boniface Tamani says Malawians should insult themselves for the prevailing economic crisis and blame what he describes as their ‘wrong and silly’ choices during elections.

Tamani, who is also a lecturer at the University of Malawi, told the church’s faithfuls on Sunday, November 12, 2023, that President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance administration has failed to run state affairs.

“Let what is happening now help us think and make correct choices. If someone comes tomorrow and tells you to vote for someone, don’t just listen. Use your head…. isn’t this the same person who did this and that? I won’t vote for them again, I don’t want I already saw again,” he said. In a viral audio clip, he also took a swipe at frequent travels by elected government officials amid the current economic mess and forex woes.

Argued Tamani: “Like we don’t think…can you be traveling around anyhow? When you hear there is a meeting somewhere…..you start…and a delegation of over 100 goes. Some even go earlier. You are running around using the hard-earned taxpayers’ money. Do you have to be using taxes in such a silly manner?”

He further stressed that politics is about development which requires capable hands to manage the economy. “When you fail this, it means you have completely failed. So, we are telling you today that this government has failed. It has failed and it is a shame to fail in this manner,” added Tamani who was commenting on the 44 percent kwacha devaluation.

Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu was not readily available for a comment on this. But Finance Minister, Simplex Chithyola Banda told Parliament this (Tuesday) morning that Malawi is in this economic turmoil due to bad economic policies by the previous administrations.

He argued the policies promoted consumption and borrowing with no sensible investments made. During an International National Day of Prayer in December last year, President Lazarus Chakwera called on Malawians not to give up on the possibility of defeating poverty and other challenges haunting the country.

He acknowledged the problems but challenged the citizens to remain positive and hopeful that the nation could overcome them. Said Chakwera: “If Malawians are strong and believe, the country can come out of problems. What is impossible with men is possible with God. Let us never give up.”
