Africa-Press – Malawi. Capital City giants Blue Eagles and Civil Service United are set for an intense battle this afternoon in a TNM Super League match at Nankhaka Stadium.
Smarting from a goal-less draw against Dedza Dynamos at Balaka Stadium on Sunday, the Eagles will be hoping to open a three-point gap between them and second-placed Nyasa Big Bullets if they collect maximum points this afternoon.
Eagles lead the 16-member log table with 26 points from 10 matches, above Bullets on goal difference. On the part of Civil, they were on bye last weekend and will be hoping to bounce back from a 1-0 home loss to Bullets recently.
Surely, this afternoon’s match promises fireworks. This is a grudge match as Eagles lost both encounters by 1-0 margins last season. Again, Eagles Coach Eliya Kananji will be trying to prove a point to his former employers after he was demoted to the Under-20 side last season.
Probably, vengeance will be on his mission this afternoon. The former Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers mentor has assembled a good side and Eagles remain unbeaten in the league this season, having won eight matches and drawn twice.
Kananji was brimming with confidence ahead of the clash. “We expect a tough match against Civil as usual. But we have to stick to our game-plan to get maximum points,” Kananji said.
In this afternoon’s match, the Eagles are expected to welcome back captain Schumacher Kuwali, who missed the match against Dedza due to an injury. Blossoming striker Gaddie Chirwa, goalkeeper Brighton Munthali, defender Sankhani Mkandawire and midfielder Paul Master are carrying Eagles hopes in this match.
For Civil, they equally have a good squad but they have been inconsistent in the early part of the season, having only won two matches, lost three and drawn four times.
They are on position 11 in the TNM Super League with 10 points from nine matches. Nevertheless, Civil Coach Franco Ndawa has faith in his troops. “We have a good crop of players and they are determined to do the job for the team,” Ndawa, who is also Flames Assistant Coach, said. Goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe is likely to start alongside Kelvin Kadzinje, Bashir Maunde, Patrick Phiri and Christopher Kumwembe.
