Africa-Press – Malawi. Blue Eagles have settled for the demoted Civil Service United Coach Eliya Kananji, The Daily Times has learnt. According to our source, Kananji, a former Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers coach, met with Eagles officials Monday to iron out contractual issues.
The source stated that the Area-30 side has opted for Kananji owing to his rich history after winning some trophies on the domestic scene. However, Eagles officials, including chairperson Alexander Ngwala, did not pick our calls.
Kananji confirmed having met Eagles officials but refused to divulge details. “I met the authorities at Area 30 on Monday morning and discussed a number of issues but I am an employee of Civo. I can’t say much as I might jeopardise things as I am an employee of Civil,” he said.
Civo Service United General Secretary Ronald Chiwaula said they were aware that Eagles were after Kananji’s signature. “I will wait to hear from Kananji himself and perhaps an official communication from Blue Eagles will help. We will then take it up from there. He is a humble young man and we can’t block him,” he said.
Kananji helped Mighty Wanderers win the Carlsberg Cup. He also led Bullets to TNM Super League championship. The development comes after former Flames and Silver Strikers coach Young Chimodzi Snr turned down Eagles’ offer to replace Phiri Snr, who was fired after the club escaped relegation by a whisker.
Chimodzi told the club that he was not ready to return to coaching. “We had discussions with Eagles but I told them it is too early for me to retire from retirement. I cannot rule out a return to football coaching but at the moment. I am not ready,” he told this paper.
