Bon Kalindo Charged

Africa-Press – Malawi. Politician-cum-comedian Bon Kalindo has been charged with publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm to the public. He appeared before the Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe yesterday.

According to State Prosecutor Cecilia Zangazanga, on November 11, 2021, in Lilongwe during a Face the Nation programme on television, Kalindo published a false statement likely to cause fear and alarm to the public.

He is believed to have alleged that he knew who was behind the killing of persons with albinism. Kalindo has however pleaded not guilty to the charge. Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda has since revoked the police bail which Kalindo was given and replaced it with a court bail.

The conditions for the court bail are that Kalindo should produce a cash bond of K50 000, surrender travel documents to the Police, report to Area 30 Police Station every fortnight and produce two sureties with a non-cash bond of K500 000.

Lawyer representing Kalindo, Isa Hassan of Khonyongwa and associates, said his client will abide by the bail conditions. “Mr Kalindo is still on bail, the police bail normally doesn’t have conditions so it has been replaced with the court bail so that some conditions should be attached to his bail,” he said. The case has been adjourned to February 1, 2022.
