Africa-Press – Malawi. Bwaila Rotary Club charity golf tournament raised over K13 million through pledges and registration fees and in the process beating its K10 million target.
The tournament, which was held at Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday, was organised to raise funds for purchasing materials and accessories for dialysis machines and supporting the Kangaroo ward at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
In addition, the tournament was aimed at raising funds for needy students and also towards combating polio. Vice President Saulos Chilima also pledged K1 million to Bwaila Rotary Club.
Chilima, who braved the scorching heat and took part in the tournament alongside Brian Coombes, hailed the golfers for taking part in the event. “We all came here for a good cause. It was a successful golf tournament as several golfers turned up for the event,” Chilima said.
Bwaila Rotary Club President Richard Dilawo also hailed Chilima for taking part in the event. “The presence of the Vice President made this tournament a success. We are also happy that several companies took part in the event. We have managed to go beyond our target and we expect to continue raising more funds” Dilawo said.
Lilongwe Golf Club Captain Thomas Chafunya said the event was well patronised after a total of 86 golfers turned out. “We are very grateful we had a huge turnout. Several companies expressed interest in taking part in the event. As golfers, we want to give back to the communities,” he added.
At the end of the golf tournament, Lilongwe Golf sponsored Club team comprising Collins Sibande and youngster Dennis Mlambia emerged champions with a net score of 63.
Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sponsored 2 team comprising William Matambo and Andrew Tembo came second after counting out a team sponsored by Anderson Engineering comprising Geoffrey Kondwani and Stone Blaisal on a net score of 63. The nearest to pin went to Boyd Luwe on hole number eight whereas Abdul Vindhan won the longest drive.
