Africa-Press – Malawi. CDH Investment Bank has set the tone for this year’s national basketball tournament after injecting K44 million into the two-day finals event.

The Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) announced the development yesterday ahead of the championship scheduled to run from Friday to Saturday at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex in Blantyre.

Basmal Secretary General Peter Gomani said this marks CDH Investment Bank’s second consecutive year of supporting the tournament, exceeding their initial commitment under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) they signed with the national basketball governing body, which outlined an annual sponsorship package of K10 million.

Gomani said the bank’s increased investment underscored its dedication to advancing the cause of basketball in Malawi.

“The sponsorship will enhance the tournament experience through the upgrading of venue facilities, including basketball hoops and court infrastructure.

“Secondly, it will enhance player resources and competitive prizes to recognise talent. Then it will help in national awareness campaigns highlighting basketball’s benefits and fostering grassroots participation,” Gomani said before extending Basmal’s gratitude to CDH Investment Bank for their unwavering support.

GEARED—TeamsHe said following the success of the 2023-024 tournament, this year’s event will be even more impactful, uniting talent from across Malawi and showcasing the sport’s growth.

CDH Investment Bank Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Thoko Mkavea said they were proud to collaborate with Basmal on the national platform.

“Sports unites people, builds discipline and unlocks potential, aligning with our purpose of driving Malawi’s socio-economic development through financial solutions. This sponsorship is a testament to our belief in the nation’s talent and future,” Mkavea said.

The national tournament is Malawi’s premier basketball event, featuring top teams from the three regional committees namely Southern Zone Basketball League, Central Zone Basketball League and Northern Zone Basketball League.

Bravehearts teams are the defending champions in both men’s and women’s categories.
