Africa-Press – Malawi. Sources close to this publication have confirmed that billionaire businessman Dr. Thom Mpinganjira was pardoned by former President Lazarus Chakwera, a move that sparked excitement among Malawians who had long championed his release.
Dr. Mpinganjira, convicted by the High Court on October 5, 2021, and sentenced to nine years for attempting to bribe judges, had been appealing his sentence at the Supreme Court of Appeal. He was held at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre, where he served 122 days before being released following the pardon.
After his release, Dr. Mpinganjira wrote to the Supreme Court withdrawing his appeal, bringing closure to a case that had captured national attention.
Malawians widely welcomed the move, seeing it as a reconciliatory act and a demonstration of the nation’s desire for fairness, forgiveness, and justice tempered with mercy.
The pardon was more than the release of a billionaire — it symbolized hope, restoration, and the fulfillment of what many citizens had long advocated: a chance for redemption and a forward-looking justice system in Malawi.
