Africa-Press – Malawi. The body of former Malawi National Football Team goalkeeper Charles Swini was taken from Area 51 in Lilongwe Wednesday to Lozi Village in Nkhotakota District for burial today.

Thabo Chakaka NyirendaAttorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda led thousands of mourners who came to pay their last respects to the departed legend.

The mourners braved the scorching sun to bid farewell to Swini whose body lay in a brown coffin bought by Kasungu North parliamentarian and radio personality Mike Bango, who was one of his closest friends.

Among the mourners were Silver Strikers and Civil Service United players and supporters who could not help but shed a tear in memory of the service that Swini rendered to their respective teams.

At exactly 1:15pm, a 36-sitter Civil Service United coaster started off from Swini’s Lilongwe City residence heading to the lakeshore district. Hundreds gathered along the road from Area 25 to Kanengo to witness the somber occasion and wave goodbye to the departed star.

At some point, the somber mood changed as fans dressed in Silver regalia chanted: “A Charlo yendani bwino Mulungu akuyang’anireni.” Swini succumbed to kidney problems on Tuesday at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, plunging the country sports fraternity into deep sorrow. Swini was born on April 30 1983 and is survived by three children.
