Africa-Press – Malawi. Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda has said that they are making progress on Financial Crimes Court operations rollout. The development comes after Parliament recently passed a bill authorising the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to establish a special court to be called Economic Financial Crimes Court as one way of expediting corruption cases.
“We are making progress because we need to fill other vacancies not only for judges but also support staff like court reporters, clerks and others. As such, we are processing that.
“But, then, we are not waiting to finish that exercise. Those [corruption] cases have to continue the normal way,” Mzikamanda said.
He said they have, so far, received funds for the cause from the Treasury such that they are in the process of sourcing materials. “If we are to go by our calendar, we can say that, by the close of the financial year, the court should be ready,” Mzikamanda said.
Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa has since asked the government to fast-track the process of coming up with the court. He said, that way, corruption cases will be dealt with.
Recently, Constitutional Affairs Minister Titus Mvalo told reporters that the Executive arm of the government is committed to curbing corruption but that, sometimes, the courts are overwhelmed with other cases, culminating in delays to conclude corruption cases.
