Africa-Press – Malawi. Children across the country have appealed to the Ministry of Finance to allocate more resources toward interventions that promote their welfare in the forthcoming National Budget. The call was made on Saturday in Lilongwe during a child-led engagement with the Ministry of Finance.
Chairperson of the National Children’s Alliance, Hattem Hassan, urged the government to increase funding in key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, water, and sanitation, describing them as critical to children’s development.
He further expressed concern that inadequate resources in schools are putting children at risk of dropping out, a situation that undermines their right to education.
“In most schools, there is a shortage of classroom blocks, leading to congestion. Teachers are also overburdened due to the high teacher-to-pupil ratio,” he said.
In response, Deputy Budget Director in the Ministry of Finance, Levison Chirwa, pledged that the upcoming national budget will be responsive to youth priorities.
Meanwhile, Save the Children Malawi’s Programme Development and Quality Director, Burcul Munyas Ghadially, emphasized that child-sensitive budgeting is essential, noting that investments in children’s health and welfare deliver the highest economic returns.
The consultation meeting formed part of the ongoing national budget preparation process.
