Chilima corruption case adjourned after Malawi AG fails to show up

Africa-Press – Malawi. Hearing of the corruption involving Vice-President Saulos Chilima did not continue today in Lilongwe because Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda did not show up in court.

Today, High Court Judge Justice Redson Kapindu was expected to hear from the Malawi Defence Force on the reasons it is reluctant to release some disclosures of the case to Chilima’s defence lawyers.

However, Chakaka Nyirenda who is expected to represent MDF sought an adjournment to a later date because he is in Blantyre attending to other official duties.

The court is expected to set another date fo the hearing. One of Chilima’s defence lawyers, Khumbo Soko, told the local media that the defence did not have problems with the adjournment.

Chilima was arrested last year by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on allegations that he received $280 000 (about K300 million) bribe from Sattar to assist the businessperson’s companies secure deals with government entities.

The bureau has since filed a new charge sheet which says Chilima received unspecified amounts of money for himself to influence a public officer to give his approval to enter into contract with Sattar’s company.
