Africa-Press – Malawi. The Zambia national football team legends defeated their Malawi counterparts 2-1 at David Kaunda Stadium in Chipata-Zambia on Saturday 28th October 2023.
It was a game of two halves as the host tormented Malawi in the first half through Clifford Mulenga, Felix Katongo, and Iginicious Lwipa who caused havoc to Malawi’s defense comprised of James Sangala, Elvis Kafoteka, Harry Nyirenda, and Allan Kamanga.
Zambia broke the deadlock just 20 minutes into the first half after Clifford Mulenga cleverly beat Elvis Kafoteka and Sangala dribbling past goalkeeper Simeon Kapuza.
The host continued with their impressive performance of the half, no wonder that in the 27th minute, Iginicious Lwipa netted the second goal after breaking the Flames’ defense.
Malawi’s Jimmy Zakazaka, Moses Chavula, and Harvey Mkacha’s efforts were nicely dealt with by the Zambia goalkeeper Kalilo Kankonje who was a marvel to watch. At half time Chipolopolo led by 2-0.
In the beginning of the second stanza coach Young Chimodzi made a change as Moses Chavula was replaced by Mapopa Msukwa. In this half, Malawi’s play changed as they were now able to exchange passes, dribble, and breakthrough Zambian defense, with Fisher Kondowe entertaining fans who fully parked the stadium.
Jimmy Zakazaka “Weapon of mass destruction” scored the Malawi Legends goal in the 49th minute from a stunning cross from Fisher “Anon’ga” Kondowe in the right flank.
Malawi came closer to leveling the score line at 65th through Francis Nsongo from Fisher Kondowe’s well-taken corner kick but his effort went over the bar. In search of more goals, Chimodzi introduced Gabriel Chirwa and James Kaniche for Russell Mwafulirwa and Jimmy Zakazaka.
However, despite the efforts Malawi could not get the equalizer and the match just ended like that to remind the football fraternity in Malawi of the pain they went through when they played active football, as Chipolopolo mostly defeated the Flames when they met several times. After the match, Malawi Coach Young Chimodzi said the match was tough and good for the legend who played with intelligence.
“We came here to help our brothers celebrate their 59th Independence, and the two sides have displayed beautifully to the satisfaction of the fans who fully parked the stadium today. Looking forward to a return match in Malawi and obviously, we will going to beat them”, Chimodzi said.
He further advised active players in the two countries and Africa as a continent to be investing saying it’s a pity seeing players who represented their nations struggling in life after active football. The leader of the delegation Rashid Ntelela who is the FAM executive committee member said the event was splendid and well organized.
“Despite the score margin, it was a beautiful game and a well-organized event. We came here it was their celebration.FAZ and FAM there is no gap in terms of how we do things but what we have learnt is that we have to continue with sister relationships, they called us here, and hopefully, in the future, we will do the same,” said Ntelera. The match was organized by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) while Malawi Legends were sponsored by J.K Productions and FAM.
