Cholera vaccine volunteers push for allowances

Africa-Press – Malawi. Over 100 volunteers who were part of the Oral Cholera Vaccination campaign that was implemented last year stormed Mzimba North Health offices on Tuesday, when they demanded allowances for 30 days. The volunteers included health surveillance assistants, traditional leaders and block leaders from Mzuzu City.

One of the volunteers, whose area of administration was Mchengautuba Township, Ezekiel Nyirenda, said, after completing the task, there has been no communication from the health office on the issue of allowances.

“Our worry is that government officials have not said anything on the issue of allowances. They promised us allowances and we feel that it is not fair for them to keep quiet on the issue because they promised us,” Nyirenda said.

Godfrey Mwale, who administered the cholera vaccine in Mambo area in Mzuzu City, said they were promised lunch allowances for all the days in question.

But, speaking separately, Mzimba North District Health Office spokesperson Lovemore Kawayi said their role was to compile names and phone numbers of people that did the work so that the details could be presented to partners.

Kawayi, who said the volunteers were just supporting healthcare workers in administering vaccines, said the volunteers should be patient because the money will be transferred into their mobile money accounts once processed.

“This is a national problem and we know that they will still be given their money,” he said. As of Tuesday, the country had registered about, 43,000 cases of cholera, with 801 patients admitted to treatment units and 1,412 deaths.
