Africa-Press – Malawi. The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has called on youths, women chiefs, and civil society organisations (CSOs) in Lufilya Constituency to be champions of peace and avoid any involvement in violence as the nation prepares for the general elections.

CHRR Programs Manager, Maxwell Mvula, made the call on Thursday during the launch of a new project titled Rise for Peace in Lufilya Constituency. The initiative aims to mobilise young people against political and electoral violence.

“We encouraged stakeholders during the introductory meeting to guide the youths to stay away from political and electoral violence. Young people should not be swayed by the small amounts of money politicians give them; instead, they should focus on building their future”, Mvula said.

Mvula emphasised that elections are a critical part of democracy, but the period leading up to them often sees a rise in violence.

“We must understand the principles of democracy and good governance. Let us respect the voting process, which Malawians agreed upon during the referendum,” he added.

Chairperson for Kilipura Youth Network, McLean Mwale, commended CHRR for launching the Rise for Peace project. He urged youth representatives to actively engage their peers and spread awareness about the importance of maintaining peace during the election period.

CHRR implements the ‘Rise for Peace’ Project with financial support from ZIVIK-IFA.
