Africa-Press – Malawi. Over 90 percent of sport associations affiliated to the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) risk losing out on annual subvention because of failure to hold annual general meetings (AGM), Malawi News Sport can reveal.
Currently, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is the only association that holds AGMs including quarterly meetings within the stipulated time. However, most associations including Netball Association of Malawi (Nam), Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) and Malawi Handball Association (Maha) only assemble during elective AGMs.
Following chaos and lack of good governance among the associations, Sports Council has released a statement asking associations to provide proof that they held an annual general assembly last year or plan to do so before the start of the next financial year.
“Council therefore, wishes to advise all associations to submit confirmations that they have held an AGM in the past 12 months or intend to do so by the end of the 2022-2023 financial year.
“This submission should be made by midnight of 15th March 2023. Any association that fails to hold an AGM will not be eligible to access funding from the council and may be further sanctioned,” reads part of the statement signed by MNCS Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa.
The statement stated that MNCS, noted with concern that some sports associations are not holding their AGM, which is contrary to and a violation of their own constitutions.
“The council wishes to inform all sports associations that in line with their own constitutions, each association affiliated to the Council, must hold an AGM,” the statement reads.
However, Nam Vice President Chimwemwe Bakali faulted MNCS for failure to provide funds to enable associations to hold AGM’s. “We are supposed to hold AGMs annually. Council does not fund AGM’s so the association is considering activities that would help source funds for the holding of the AGM.
“It is one of the priorities of Nam to hold the AGM not only to comply with MNCS requirements for funding but to ensure good governance,” he said. Similarly, Ham General Secretary Geoffrey Biya asked the Sports Council to empower associations to hold AGM’s.
“We are using our resources to run the association. We are renting an office through the president’s initiative. Council should be empowering us to be good at sport governance,” he said.
