Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has said the rise in cases of suicide in the country is an indication that people are giving up easily, asking Malawians to be encouraging each other.
Chakwera, who said this when he joined the Katawa Assemblies of God congregation for prayers in Mzuzu, said there is no land around the globe without problems. He said Malawians should be joyous when facing challenges as there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
“Most people in this generation are giving up [easily] and it is not surprising that cases of suicide and mental health issues are going up. Let’s go out there and encourage one another. There is no place on the Earth where everything is rosy… Keep the hope, keep the faith, God has not abandoned His creation. He certainly did not abandon Malawi,” Chakwera said.
Bishop Trywell Gwedeza, who is the Northern Region Division Director for Assemblies of God, hailed Chakwera for praying with them. “Having the holder of the highest office in the land praying with us at a local church like ours is such as honour,” he said.
Malawi Police Service statistics for October alone show that the country has lost 58 people to suicide. Out of the figure, 55 are men while three are women. The figure has increased as compared to the same time last year, when 44 people committed suicide in October.
Out of the figure, 41 were men while two were women. Cases of suicide have been surging over the years, such that, between January and August 2019, 116 cases of suicide were recorded. In the year 2020, 182 cases of suicide were registered during the same period.
