Does Chakwera really deserve the title of ‘Ngwazi’?

Africa-Press – Malawi. It is mind-blowing to hear President Lazarus Chakwera concentrating on how to accumulate useless titles like Ngwazi. What will Malawian citizens benefit from this?

It is also flabbergasting that Chakwera is not at peace to be addressed with his title ‘Reverend’ but on the contrary, he graciously accepts the secular title of ‘Ngwazi’. Should we conclude that President Chakwera is on a backsliding terrain?

One can speculate that the Chakwera’s disdain of his call as a Reverend proves the point that his actions of tolerating corruption, nepotism and campaign lies are not in conformity with Christian values.

For starters, the title Ngwazi etymologically means a conquerer. It dates back to the early days when worriers would come home with a triumphant welcome.

Dr. Hastings Kamuzu, the first President of Malawi came to Nyasaland to fulfill three things which he did. He really conquered the so-called stupid Rhodesia and Nyasaland federation. He conquered the imperialistic British rule by bringing independence to Malawi. For sure, Kamuzu Banda deserves the title of Ngwazi.

But what has President Chakwera done to be called Ngwazi? Most of his campaign promises have never been fulfilled and some will be never be. A good example is the promise of one million jobs within the first year of Chakwera’s regime. Almost two years down the line of his rule, no one million jobs have been created. Instead over 600,000 people lost their jobs. Very pathetic.

Are we therefore not insane if we decorate President Chakwera with the title of Ngwazi for his unfulfilled campaign promises, rising incidences of corruption and high cost of living?

For sure, President Chakwera has conquered nothing that has benefited many Malawians. He doesn’t deserve the Ngwazi title. His lessez-faire leadership style has accelerated nepotism, regionalism and corruption. Does this deserve a medal award or a title of Ngwazi? Not at all.

A wake up call to President Chakwera is that Malawians deserve better. Citizens voted for a regime change so that their lives should be transformed for the better.

Unfortunately, President Chakwera’s government benefits only a few. This may backfire in the next general elections in 2025 for most Malawians are not fools.
