Africa-Press – Malawi. The outspoken Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) regional secretary for the southern region Sherrif Kaisi is against the abolishing of death sentence in the country.
Kaisi was speaking at the sidelines of death sentence consultation meeting held in Blantyre on Friday, May 20, 2022. He therefore urged that provisions that is in Quran and the Bible which state that a person who takes a soul should be killed too can not be tempted with. Kaisi further stated that repelling the death sentence law can be seen as something which is not in line with words of God.
In his remarks, legal affairs committee of parliament vice chair, who is also Member of Parliament for Rumphi Central, Mc Dowell Mkandawire said that from other meetings conducted in central a northern regions delegates are geared to have the death penalty sentence abolished in the country.
According to University of Malawi (UNIMA) legal clinic manager, Alexious Kamangila during the one party rule until 1993 out of 823 people on death sentence 299 were executed while others died of natural causes and some were pardoned.
