Africa-Press – Malawi. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says it does not recognise a rally that the party’s Southern Region vice president Kondwani Nankhumwa has organised this coming Sunday.

Posters making rounds on social media indicate that DPP vice president for the Central Region Zelia Chakale will hold a rally at Mgona Ground on Saturday before Nankhumwa and general secretary Grezelder Jeffrey conduct theirs at the same venue the following day. DPP national organising secretary Chimwemwe Chipungu disowned the Sunday meeting, saying organisers did not go through his office.

“We are only aware of Saturday’s rally which the party has organised through the National Governing Council in coordination with the office of the National Organising [Committee leader]. We are not aware of another meeting on Sunday; so, we cannot comment on it,” Chipungu said.

However, DPP secretary-general Jeffrey described Saturday’s rally as a curtain-raiser of theirs. “I am the party’s chief executive officer and, together with our vice president for the Southern Region, have organised this rally. So, if someone says they do not recognise it, what do they mean?

Saturday ndi kalambulabwalo chabe kudikira wa munthu wamkulu Sunday [Saturday’s rally is a curtain-raiser for Sunday’s rally],” she said. The development cements widening divisions that have lately rocked the former governing party over positions.
