Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament Daudi Chikwanje is expected to return to court on July 15, 2025 for the continuation of a criminal case in which he is accused of inciting political violence during a party rally.
According to a notice of hearing from the First Grade Magistrate Court sitting in Liwonde, the case—Criminal Case No. 24 of 2025—will proceed before Magistrate Boaz at 1:30pm in open court.
Chikwanje is facing the charges after allegedly telling supporters at a political rally to “lynch all Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members in the area”.
The State says the remarks were inflammatory and intended to provoke violence.
Director of Public Prosecutions Masauko Chamkakala confirmed that two State witnesses have already testified, with one remaining.
“The first witness was a village headman who attended the rally and recorded the statement. He tendered both his phone and the video clip in court,” Chamkakala said.
The second witness, Wellington Chimzakazi, a digital forensic expert, claimed that the phone used was the one that captured the footage and further testified that the video had not been altered.
He also presented a forensic analysis report to the court.
The final witness, police investigator Chilinda, is expected to testify when the matter resumes later this month.
“This is a serious case. The statements made had the potential to incite violence, and we are treating it with the urgency and importance it demands,” Chamkakala said.
The case has stirred public interest, particularly in light of growing concerns about political intolerance ahead of the September 16, 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.
