DPP turmoil: JB, Chilima smartly left than Nankhumwa

Africa-Press – Malawi. On different occasions, Joyce Banda, Saulos Chilima and Chimunthu Banda had expressed presidential ambitions while in Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) but they were much smarter and wise than Kondwani Nankhumwa as each of them opted to move out the DPP or form their own parties than attempt to usurp elected leadership of DPP in broad-daylight.

But the blatant and open attempts by Nankhumwa using DPP Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey to usurp DPP leadership have exposed his low level of education, wisdom and desperation for power.

In 2010, the DPP fired the then Vice President Joyce Banda who was also DPP First Vice President and Khumbo Kachali who was DPP second Vice President. Acting smart and wise, Joyce Banda went on to form her own party Peoples Party (PP).

In 2018, Vice President Saulos Chilima acted wise and smart by opting not to challenge Peter Mutharika at a convention or hold parallel NGC or Conventions. Chilima graciously resigned from the DPP and went on to form his UTM party.

In 2013, Henry Chimunthu Banda then holding a powerful position of Speaker of Parliament and once Secretary General of DPP gathered courage to contest at a properly convened and only DPP convention.

He acted wise and smart by not holding parallel NGC and party convention but accepted defeat to Peter Mutharika, although he disputed the election process. In the case of Wa Jeffrey, It is not the first time for a serving Secretary General of the DPP party to be re-assigned.

In 2014, Peter Mutharika removed Dr Jean Kalilani as DPP Secretary General and re-assigned her and three others and appointed late Julius Kundontoni as new SG.

Nankhumwa is still young but he is displaying too much desperation for power and an appetite to be used by the ruling party without acting wise and smart like Joyce Banda, Chilima and Chimunthu Banda did.

It also reveals that Nankhumwa is not sure of defeating Peter Mutharika at a properly constituted and convened convention. Peter Mutharika must act swiftly and decisively to uproot the rebellious elements of Nankhumwa and his team and save the party of his late brother Bingu wa Mutharika from extinction.
