Africa-Press – Malawi. Civic Education and National Unity Minister Timothy Mtambo has said his ministry has finalised drafting a bill that will facilitate the establishment of the long-awaited Malawi Peace and Unity Commission.
Mtambo made the remarks at Mzuzu University (Mzuni) on Saturday during consultations on development of National Values and Establishment of the National Day of Unity and Cultural Heritage.
“The Bill has already been submitted to the Office of the President and Cabinet for other processes to take place before tabling it in the National Assembly,” he said. The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission will be an independent body entrusted with spearheading the promotion of peace and unity in the country.
Mtambo further disclosed that the ministry was finalising the conceptualisation of a Truth and Reconciliation Programme to ensure that victims of the government were compensated.
Mzuni Vice-Chancellor Professor John Kalenga Saka welcomed the consultation, saying it would give ordinary citizens the opportunity to voice out their concerns on issues of national importance.
