Africa-Press – Malawi. Blackberry’ Kayira has founded a charitable organisation, Berry Sports Corner, to reach out to the needy.
Kayira, who is also a former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets player, said he created the group to use it as a tool for supporting others.
“Berry’s Sports Corner is a WhatsApp group that was established as a spin off to my column, ‘Berry on Sunday’. It is made up of people who loved my play, people who love my writings and sports lovers generally.
“I established Berry’s Sports Corner as a platform to get views from sports lovers and also to get feedback on my articles. However, over time, it has become more than that as it has developed into one of the topmost sports WhatsApp groups in Malawi.
I created the group and sent out the group link on my Facebook page and people were joining willingly,” The Sunday Times columnist said.
Kayira said they intend to mark the group’s operations with a donation at Mulanje District Hospital this weekend.
“Currently, we are on a mission to cheer about 100 children in the children’s ward at Mulanje District Hospital. We intend to provide them with necessities such as sugar and soap.
Before cheering the sick, we will do general cleaning at Mulanje Bus Depot,” Kayira, who also played in Mozambique, said.
He explained that beneficiaries will be determined by the District Nursing Officer for Mulanje as the nurses are the ones who really know the vulnerable.
“This far, funds have been raised from members of the group only. We run several initiatives such as one picture day where a person sends his picture and brief introduction for a fee. Secondly favourite player day whereby a person mentions his or her favourite player for a fee,” Kayira said.
He appealed for support, saying the group was transparent.
“The group is very transparent. There are about 16 administrators who are answerable to each other and no one makes a decision on his or her own. The general members are constantly updated and the budget, funds and expenses are published for their comments,” he said.
Sports analyst Frank Chakanga said it was important for former players to engage in such activities.
“Former players can use their reputation to influence both the public and private sectors to support the needy,” Chakanga said.
