Fam approves K15.3bn budget

Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has approved K15.3 billion budget for the 2026 financial year.

This was approved during the association’s virtual Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) yesterday. The figure represents about 40 percent from the projected K11billion revenue for the 2025.

Meanwhile, Fam has allocated K3.8 billion for senior national football teams’ activities in 2026, representing a 10 percent increase.

The association spent K3.4 billion for the senior teams in 2025. Fam said the Flames are expected to participate in the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers, African Nations Championship (Chan) and the 2026 Cosafa Cup.

The Scorchers, on the other hand, will take part in the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals in Morocco, which will be used as World Cup qualifiers. They will also take part in Cosafa Women’s Championship.

“Both teams combined will play few games compared to the year 2025 hence, overall increase in expenditure is moderate,” reads the document.

Apart from the five competitions, both the Flames and the Scorchers are expected to play international friendly matches during the Fifa window.

The Flames will play two friendly matches in March 2026 before the Afcon qualifiers in September, October and November. The Scorchers will play two friendly matches in January, 2026 as part of preparations for the Wafcon finals in March.

In a related development, Fam has increased budget for the junior teams’ participation international competition in 2026. The junior teams have been allocated K1.6 billion against K781 million in 2025.

Fam president Fleetwood Haiya said the 2026 budget is anchored on strengthening youth development and grassroots football, football competition and league development among others.

“We have developed a realistic, disciplined and growth oriented budget, guided by the Fam strategic plan, the Fifa Forward 3.0 framework and our shared vision of transforming football into a competitive, professionally run and financially sustainable industry,” he said.

The total projected expenditure is pegged at K14.8 billion, leaving the association with K507 million surplus, which will be channelled towards capital projects and long-term football development initiatives.

Fam is expected to get funding from Fifa, Malawi government, corporate sponsorship and partnerships, investment income as well as broadcasting rights and gate collections.

In another development, Fam has also allocated K40million subvention to its Member Associations as well as K10 million for administration and operations costs to Football Legends Associations (FLA) and Football Players Association (FPA).

Both FLA and FPA attended the congress for the time ever. Haiya said the two associations were included as professional and technical partners. “Our vision commits to greater inclusion of players and key stakeholders within the association’s governance structures,” he said.

FPA General Secretary Ernest Mangani said the allocation of resources to the association was a milestone. “We applaud Fam for the gesture. We will work closely with Fam to ensure that all players are motivated to fight for their country in all competitions,” Mangani said.

Fam has also set a side K527 million for capacity building for its member associations.
